About the Department
Linguistics plays a significant role in our daily lives, serving as a portal to understanding the power of language and its immense impact on our world. Unfortunately, in our state, maximum are not aware of the vast potential of this discipline. Thereupon, the department of Linguistics was established in Naorem Birahari College, Khundrakpam from the academic session of 2023 so as to cater the prospects and enable the upcoming academicia of the region to the ongoing revolution of the multi-dimensional stream. Naorem Birahari College is the first ever college in Manipur offering B.A. Course in Linguistics.
Objective:
We endeavor to train a new firebrand generation of students who can surpass the traditional limitations of language study and find accessibility in multiple fields of study, research and employment. We aim at inculcating the values, essence, and humanity through the intricate, sensitive paradigm of language. Moreover, the students would be made to imbibe and master the wide range of skills provided by the study of Linguistics. After completion of the course offered, students would have a wide range of choices for corresponding further study and professional career. To mention a few, students would be adequately equipped with comprehensible knowledge to pursue and opt careers in editorial, journalism and mass communication jobs.
Laboratory Facility:
The department provides language laboratory which concentrates mainly on improving communication skills like listening, speaking and ear training of sounds.
Faculty:
The department with the expert staff aims at shaping future researchers and language experts. The department has total staff strength of 7 including one non-teaching staff. Out of the six faculty members, five are Ph.D. degree holders with UGC-NET/JRF.
Programs Achievements:
The department had the opportunity to organize “International Mother Language Day” successfully on 21st February, 2024 in collaboration with English and Manipuri departments at the college premises.
As of now, the department has two batches. The first batch students have taken their first semester examination for the academic session 2023-2024 and their classes for the second semester have been started. For the second batch i.e., the first semester for the academic session 2024-2025, the classes have been started from the month of August, 2024.
